Following their historic election win In 1972, Gough Whitlam’s progressive Labor Government created the Australian National Railways Commission, a federal government agency which, for a quarter of a century, provided reliable and affordable passenger train services that linked metropolitan Adelaide with regional South Australia.
The agency sadly came to an end with the election of the Howard Government 1996. The new Coalition Government introduced a host of conservative and neo-liberal reforms including the privatisation of valuable public assets, one of which being Australian National in 1998. This ultimately resulted in the complete cessation of South Australian regional passenger railway services by the turn of the millennium.
To mark the 20th anniversary of this depressing watershed event, come along to the Metro on Friday 13 April to see three bands pay tribute to the golden age of SA rail travel.
